SoapMaker Software: The Ultimate Organization Tool

Record keeping: it’s one of those things that you know is important, but always seems like a chore. Whether tracking your finances or your soapmaking sessions, keeping a record of what you did and the results can keep you from making costly mistakes in the future. And just like accounting software can help with balancing checkbooks and tracking your spending, a software program written for makers of soap (and lotion, and candles, and whatever other product) has made the record keeping and day-to-day management of my business much easier!

Inventory Management
Whenever I receive a shipment of some supplies (like oils, labels, or lye) I input the info into my inventory management section of the software. The program then calculates the cost per ounce, even taking into account any shipping charge or special discounts. The next time I make one of my recipes, the program will update the cost of my batch, and then deduct the oils and sodium hydroxide and other ingredients I just used in my recipe from my total available supplies. And I can set an alarm to warn me when I’m getting low on something and it’s time to reorder. No more surprises when searching for an ingredient!


Recipe Management
Sure SoapMaker acts like a lye calculator, helping you figure out how much sodium hydroxide you need for your soap recipe. But what if you used shea butter instead of cocoa butter? How would that change the quality of the soap? How would it change the cost? SoapMaker can tell you! And not just solid soap; SoapMaker is also able to manage recipes for liquid soap, cream soap and non-soap things, like candles, lotion and “melt and pour” soap projects.

Product Status
I can follow the history of every batch of product I make, from the recipe that I used, to how many bars of soap I have left, to who they were sold to. Need to find all the batches made with a particular recipe? No problem. Wondering how productive I was last week? I can choose to see batches made during any time period I choose.

These are only a few of the helpful tasks that this program can do.     Can the software calculate labor charges? Can it calculate wholesale and retail pricing?

    If I purchase the software, I have already started my business. How would I go about entering soaps that have already been made and product that has already been used? (It looks like the finished product is tied to the supplies you use to make the product.) This would be my main concern regarding the software.

    We reached out to the creator of the software and here are your questions with his responses:

    Q: Can the software calculate labor charges?
    A: You can keep track of wages in a separate report, or build a labor charge into your product costs.

    Q: Can it calculate wholesale and retail pricing?
    A: You can create a price list with both retail and wholesale prices, and have them automatically inserted into customer invoices. The Sales History report shows your profit for each sale.

    Q: If I purchase the software, I have already started my business. How would I go about entering soaps that have already been made and product that has already been used?
    (It looks like the finished product is tied to the supplies you use to make the product.) This would be my main concern regarding the software.
    A: The Users Manual gives step-by-step instructions for initial setup, which includes defining your ingredients, recording purchases to establish costs and stock levels, and if desired, recording production batches to establish your current product stock.
