Won’t you join us for the last official weekend at The Nova Studio?

We thought we would do something really fun for our final days of classes in our Point Richmond studio. Since it’s so close to the holidays, most people who make Soap, Bath, & Body products for a living are knee-deep in orders. During their busiest time of the year, they simply don’t have the time to take classes.

However… it’s the perfect time to take a class for anyone who wants to expand their knowledge or pick up a new hobby for fun or for gift giving (the very reason Lori first started making products way back in 2000… a passion that resulted in her opening The Nova Studio in 2003).

So, for our “last hurrah” at The Nova Studio, we recruited two of our favorite local teachers, Jen Grimes & Alice Duvernell and asked them to teach some of their favorite handmade products. We specifically chose products that make wonderful gifts, so not only can you come & learn how to make them, but also cross off a good portion of people on your gift list, all in one fell swoop. We hope you’ll join us!

Note: A materials fee of $80 will be collected at the beginning of class.

Day 1: Saturday, 12/5/15
DIY Holiday Gift Making Weekend Part 1:
Melt & Pour Soap – Liquid Soap, Lotion & Cream Bases

Kick back, relax, and get your craft on! Whether you’re looking for creative handcrafted gifts that are delightfully fun to make or just need a stress-free escape from the holiday madness, bring your friends to The Nova Studio for a productive day of crafting with Jen. Yes, holiday gifting really can be quick and easy – and she’ll be here to show you how. No prior experience necessary.

We’ll start with the wonderful world of Melt & Pour Soap Crafting. Often marketed as glycerin soaps, these soaps are easy to personalize and make stunning gifts. Learn tips and tricks for working with melt and pour soaps while you make & package 12 custom colored, custom scented, guest-size soap bars, ready for gifting (or heck, keep some for yourself – we won’t tell anyone)!

After a mid-day break for lunch, you’ll explore the wonderful world of pre-made bases. Jen will use her famous all-natural Liquid Soap from scratch as the base for this class. Learn why foamer bottles are amazing for handcrafted soap & how to properly formulate using them. You’ll be customizing your own liquid soap concoctions with your choice of essential oils and skin-safe colors. “Make & Take” home six 8.5-oz bottles of your custom liquid soaps.

Last but not least, discover how easy & fun customizing and bottling your own Lotions & Creams can be. Jen will discuss the different options & considerations when choosing a base formula and give recommendations for her favorite suppliers. “Make & Take” home six 4-oz containers of custom lotion or cream creations, all labeled & ready to to give as gifts to those lucky enough to be on your holiday list.

That’s a total of 24 individual gifts you’ll take home. Need more gifts? No worries! We plan to have extra supplies available for purchase so that no one on your gift list goes wanting. Be forewarned, after this class, you may just find yourself wanting to dive deeper into the world of handcrafted bath and body products for fun or for profit.

Jen headshotJen Grimes started her descent down the make-your-own cosmetic rabbit hole after stumbling over books with vintage cosmetic recipes in her local library. After picking up and putting down books on how to make soap (all those bizarre ingredients and safety measures!), she took the plunge, promptly became addicted, and was certified as a soapmaker through the Handcrafted Soap & Cosmetics Guild (HSCG). Today, Jen is a proud member of and volunteer for HSCG & owns and operates Loft Soap. She has a passion for hot-processed soap, loves funny-looking soap and can often be found communing with other soapmakers at The Nova Studio. Alice headshotAlice Duvernell is an artist & gilder who moved to the Bay Area after living in the south of France for 8 years. There she started researching problematic & sensitive skin types & developed an interest in the amazing virtues of essential oils & hydrosols. Her interest in culture & her studies in anthropology led her to travel in South America where she expanded her passion & awareness in native medicinal plants. During her last journey to Brazil, she set up a laboratory where she shared with the locals her homemade techniques for making hydrosols & other cosmetics, using only native plants.
