9:00 am – 9:15 am: Orientation & Introductions

9:15 am – 1 pm: Botanical Extracts: Infusions, Tinctures & Glycerites
In this demo & hands-on class you will be learning the fundamentals of herbal extractions in oil, alcohol & glycerin. These processes are very accessible and will give you the knowledge to work from scratch with the plants to a finished product. Extracts are sold everywhere and are often highly priced: green tea extract (anti-oxidant, used in anti-wrinkle creams), calendula infused oil (soothing in massage bars or baby products), comfrey or lavender tinctures (excellent for problematic skin types). We will discuss a range of cosmetic herbs and uses and how these basic products will enhance your beauty lines and insure quality to your customers.

Students will take home helpful handouts, an 8 ounce oil extraction, an 8 ounce glycerin extraction and a 1 ounce herbal tincture. Students who make other bath & body products will be able to take their extracts home for use in their formulations. All products made in this class are 100% NATURAL (they are free from synthetic ingredients and preservatives).

1 pm – 2 pm: Break for Lunch

2 pm – 5:30 pm: Using Bee Products in Your Formulations
This unique seminar will delve into the wonderful world of BEE PRODUCTS: Beeswax, Honey, Pollen, Propolis & Royal Jelly – a natural health & beauty cabinet! They are ingredients of choice for cosmetic formulators because they act as a real food for the skin. Bee products are packed with mineral substances, vitamins, amino acids, and are extremely nourishing and soothing. Used in the right way, the bees’ bounty can enhance your body & facial products like no other natural ingredients can.

BEESWAX is the ultimate skin protectant, creating a long-lasting protective barrier while still allowing the skin to breathe. It helps retain moisture, keeping skin supple, and is excellent when used in combination with other bee products for wound healing.
HONEY, a wonderful ally for the skin, has been used since the beginning of time for scarring, wounds and infections. It’s antibacterial, softens the skin, and contains antioxidants that help maintain elasticity and youth.
POLLEN is truly a “super food” and a powerful skin nutrient with emollient, anti-acne, regenerating and antioxidant effects. It’s very nourishing to the epidermis and hair, giving it strength and beauty.
PROPOLIS, a key anti-aging ingredient, is used to help alleviate many skin conditions (it was used in balms for the gods & goddesses of Egypt). Bees use propolis to protect the hive from parasites and viruses as it holds powerful anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties.
ROYAL JELLY was a key cosmetic for the Egyptians. They used it to help their skin stay hydrated and protected in a very harsh and dry environment. Today Royal jelly is used in natural skincare products for its rejuvenating and toning properties. It’s also recognized in the medical realm to be effective against bacterial skin infections, dermatitis and eczema.

Using bee products will enhance your cosmetic formulations (lotions, creams, serums, cleansers, toners & more) and open you to a wide range of therapeutic effects. These include, but are not limited to, anti-aging, preservation, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, regenerative, balancing & re-mineralizing.

Bees are necessary to the well-being of our ecosystem and many species are threatened by pollution. Using bee products helps support and maintain the art of bee keeping, a tradition older that the middle age. Using an in-depth seminar format, Alice brings back this ancient knowledge of the virtues of bee hives.

In the last half-hour of this seminar, students will create a 4-oz. herbal honey extract as Alice brings to light the different therapeutic uses of honey in your diet and how it can help reinforce your immune system, reduce allergies and soothe cough and bronchial infections. In addition to the honey infusion (which can be used either internally or externally), students will take home helpful handouts that include information on how to use bee products in various skin care formulations and applications.

9:00 am –1 pm: Healing Balms & Salves
In this very HANDS-ON class, you will discover and experience the different ingredients that can be used to create a variety of helpful Balms and Salves. Students will work in small groups to learn the entire process of how to make a the products from A to Z (including measuring, making, preparing containers, pouring & labeling). Body Balms are incredibly nourishing and regenerating to the skin, while Healing Salves are used for specific ailments such as colds (to help open the respiratory track), muscle pain, insect bites (to help relieve itching), psoriasis, eczema, or other skin conditions.

Balms & Salves have the added benefit of not requiring any chemical preservatives (so they can be made 100% naturally). Students will learn the best oils, waxes and other ingredients to use in balms for their beneficial properties. Balms can be very concentrated and are valued for their healing benefits. Students will also learn the secrets of properly incorporating (into their balms/salves) handmade or purchased herbal tinctures, oil infusions and essential oils (take Alice’s 3 Types of Herbal Extract Class if you’d like to learn how to make your own herbal extracts & infused oils). As a BONUS, you will also learn how to make a Healing Zinc Balm, which can be used by adults for skin inflammation or babies for diaper rash.

Students will take home helpful handouts, a 2 oz. Customized Soothing Body Balm, a 1 oz. Winter Respiratory Salve, and a 2 oz. Healing Zinc Salve (for adults or babies).

1 pm – 2 pm: Break for Lunch

2 pm – 5:30 pm: Liquid Gold: Carrier Oils & Their Secret Virtues
In this seminar, Alice Duvernell will introduce you to useful, practical & in-depth information about the health & cosmetic qualities of common & more unique precious carrier oils. You’ll learn about potential allergens, how to choose the best oils for each skin type, including how to differentiate between nourishing oils /semi-dry oils / dry oils, & also which oils to choose to treat various skin conditions.

Alice will delve into phyto chemistry, explaining what are trans, saturated & unsaturated fats, fatty acids and most importantly what vitamins & essential omegas cold pressed oils contain. Carrier oils are truly magical and their virtues bring beauty both outside & in (to your cosmetic formulations and also your personal diet).

In the last half-hour of this seminar, Alice will share her “Top 10 Amazing Oils” and students will formulate their own 4-ounce custom-made cold pressed organic massage oil. In addition, students will take home handouts that include reference tables & helpful info for formulating.

9:00 am –1 pm: Handmade Hydrosols & Facial Toners

Handmade Hydrosols (Distillate Waters)
The word hydrosol comes from the Latin root “hydro” and “sol” which means “water solution.” When a plant is distilled to obtain an essential oil, many chemical compounds of the plant first build up in the water. A hydrosol is the distillate water that remains under the thin layer of essential oil after the steaming process. Hydrosols contain many of the same beneficial components of essential oils, but in a much more subtle, gentle way.

On their own, hydrosols make wonderful, all-natural facial toners & soothing skin spritzers, but they can be used in a number of other cosmetic formulations such as lotions, creams, soaps, facial masks, scrubs, etc. They are suitable for a wide range of skin types, particularly sensitive skin. For this reason, they are safe for use in baby and pet products (even okay to use on cats, which normally cannot metabolize any essential oils at all).

In this class, you will learn how you can make your very own hydrosol at home (without special distillation equipment) from scratch using readily available cooking tools. You will experience the marvelous aromas, as well as the soothing, moisturizing and cooling effects of hydrosols. The class will focus on 6 very beneficial hydrosols (Chamomile, Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary, Geranium & Rose), their properties, and their many uses in skin care. All of the plants used in the class are available locally, and you will develop an awareness of what can be easily grown in your own garden or purchased at convenient neighborhood resources.

Alice will cover the following, as she demonstrates how to make a 20 oz. batch of hydrosol using her unique method:

• Brief history and basic knowledge of hydrosols
• Necessary materials, supplies and equipment to make your own from scratch at home
• Six very beneficial hydrosols and their many uses in skin care
• Recipes for facial toners, aromatherapy mists, masks, creams, baby care & more
• In class creation (hands-on) of clay facial masks using hydrosols
• Bottling freshly made hydrosols: hygienic awareness, giving products a longer shelf life

You will go home with handouts and the knowledge of how to make great hydrosols and hydrosol-based cosmetics from scratch as well as a 4-oz. spritzer bottle of freshly made hydrosol and a delightful clay mask (something hands-on for you to experience how hydrosols can be easily incorporated into your skin care routine). Due to the nature of making hydrosols from scratch (in batches), this class is mainly demonstration style with some hands-on elements. NOTE: THIS IS NOT A CLASS ON HOW TO MAKE ESSENTIAL OILS.

Facial Toners
Once your skin is cleansed, a toner is used to balance, hydrate, soothe and restore elasticity to your skin. In some cases, a toner will also act as an astringent, tightening the pores. Many store-bought toners contain synthetic preservative, but Alice will show you how to make a natural facial toner, using a variety of herbally-infused ingredients such as decoctions and tinctures as well as skin-friendly ingredients like aloe vera & honey (optional, can eliminate if you are vegan).

You will take home helpful handouts, a 4-oz. bottle of facial toner, and a 1-oz. cleansing oil in a glass dropper bottle.

1 pm – 2 pm: Break for Lunch

2 pm – 5:30 pm: Luxury Facial Serums
In this unique hands-on and demo class, learn how to create your own luxury facial serums. Serums are a very popular product in the cosmetic industry today. They are used most commonly at night, and their purpose is to nourish the skin deeply with precious ingredients.

You will learn how to make two different types of facial serums to help regenerate and heal the skin. Alice will first demo the more complex gel/water/oil serum and then invite you to customize your own oil-based serum with high quality essential oils that you will choose, based on your skin type.

Throughout the class, you will be introduced to the techniques on how to incorporate precious hydrosols (distillate waters from plants), essential oils, infused herbs and different types of herbal extracts. You will learn properties of the different carrier oils (like which are anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, nourishing, etc.) and find out how to properly preserve your serums. Also, we will discuss how to use natural gums as jellifying agents (for the gel-based serum).

Students will take home helpful handouts, a 1 oz. gel-based rejuvenating & replenishing serum in an airless pump bottle, and a 1 oz. oil-based customized serum in a glass dropper.

9:00 am –12:30 pm: Nourishing Face Creams
(Suggested Prerequisite: Our Lotions & Creams 101 Class or eClass Handout)

In this mostly demo-style class, you will learn Alice’s method for creating high-quality facial creams. You will be introduced to amazing rejuvenating and healing carrier oils from all over the world, and also hydrosols (distillate waters from plants), essential oils, and different types of herbal extracts.

Learn which types of waxes and emulsifiers can be used in cosmetic crafting, rules of hygiene, preserving agents and how to make your creams unique to the market. Alice Duvernell, cosmetic designer and teacher will share with you the great pleasures and challenges of creating superior facial products that you and your customers will never forget.

Students will take home helpful handouts and two amazing freshly-made facial creams (made in class), one in a 1-oz. airless pump bottle & one in a 1-oz. jar.

12:30 pm – 1:30 pm: Break for Lunch

2 pm – 5:30 pm: Formulating for Skin Conditions
During this investigative demo and hands-on class, you will be introduced to the top “Botanical Foods” used in cosmetic formulations targeting particular skin conditions. As we know, skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis are highly related to the dysfunction of internal organs, stress or inappropriate food habits. Nevertheless, properly made skincare products can help relieve and soothe these uncomfortable and often unsightly skin problems.

In this new and unique class, Alice will introduce you to a wide range of traditional and unusual botanical extracts, essential oils, and other natural ingredients that have the ability to make our skin feel and look better. Some of the conditions we will study include Acne & Blemishes, Eczema, Chronic Dryness and Flakiness, Psoriasis, Scaring and Rosacea.

Please note that these problematic conditions are not always curable from the outside, but most people can alleviate the bothersome symptoms by using certain beneficial ingredients. This class will also cover which products and ingredients to AVOID, which in some cases can even cure the problem altogether.

You will leave this class with informative handouts, a (custom) 1/3-oz. roll-on Blemish Buster, a (custom) 2-oz Recovery Gel & a 1-oz Dry Skin Stick.
