This workshop is geared for visual artists (painters, collage artists, photographers, fabric artists among others) who want to learn how to extend their imagery beyond traditional media. You will learn how to make unique digital prints and transfers with a desktop inkjet printer and new inkjet coating products. This day long workshop offers printing techniques not covered in my previous image transfer classes. New products sampled in class include InkAid, Golden Digital Grounds, DASS Transfer Film and DASS Universal Precoat. These processes will work with most desktop inkjet printers, both dye- or pigment-based inks.

In the morning, you will learn how to prepare prints and make custom surfaces using carrier sheets such as polypropylene cutting mats and release sheets. This will give time for these porous and non-porous custom surfaces to dry for printing on in the afternoon.

I will conduct several mini-lectures that will cover how to:

  • apply inkjet coatings: InkAid/Golden Digital Grounds/DASS Universal Precoat
  • tape down paper or fabric onto carrier sheets
  • print on textured surfaces without jamming your printer
  • overprint on art papers with deckled edges
  • apply post coats and varnishes to finished artwork

I will also demonstrate how to transfer images onto paper and fabric using DASS Transfer Films and various mediums. Students will learn to add creative and painterly effects to these transfers by manipulating the image and colorizing the prints before transferring.

The afternoon session features Bonny Lhotka’s technique for gelatin transfers onto tumbled marble tiles. One of the original artists of Digital Atelier and a co-author of Digital Art Studio, Bonny has developed products and videos for her new company, Digital Art Studio Seminars (DASS).

The workshop ends with printing onto the custom surfaces that students prepared in the morning. Students will use the images they bring to class and print them onto inkjet-coated foil, textured papers and other custom surfaces. These finished prints can be used as the basis for further artwork, collages and painted canvases. You will also get a handout with instructions to continue practicing these techniques at home as well as a helpful resource list.

Note: There is NO prerequisite.

WHAT TO BRING:
Students should bring at least four images no larger than 4"x6" to use as originals. Color or black and white photocopies are required – do not bring original photos that might be damaged. We will create digital prints by scanning them and printing onto the custom substrates we will prepare in class. Please bring your own metal ruler, scissors, bone folder, X-acto knife with sharp blade and cutting mat, apron, and notebook. I will supply all other materials, including inkjet coatings, transfer mediums, and inkjet printers. There will be a break for lunch, so please bring a brown bag lunch or lunch money.
