Recommended Books

We love books here at The Nova Studio and are often asked what books we recommend for making your own bath & body products and other related topics. So we put together this list of our favorites below (and will continue to add to this list). They are sold by Amazon.com and by clicking on the affiliate links (below) on this page prior to purchasing, you are helping to support The Nova Studio.

The banner to the left is for a service called "Amazon Prime." I've had it for the past year and ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! It allows you to get unlimited FREE 2-DAY SHIPPING on most items sold by amazon.com with NO MNIMUM ORDER - and if you order more than one item in an order, each item can be sent to a different address again, with FREE 2-DAY SHIPPING (very convenient for last minute gifts). The cost is $79 annually - and if you order even once per month it will more than pay for itself. Click the banner for more information and a FREE TRIAL.

Herbs for Natural Beauty
Rosemary Gladstar, one of America's foremost herbalists provides concise, simple-to-understand, and practical information for using herbs for health and well-being. Her books contains profiles of specific herbs, cautions, contraindications, and easy-to-make recipes to relieve common ailments.

The Herbal Home Spa
Herbalist Greta Breedlove offers a great selection of make it yourself recipes. Some of which can be packaged and given as gifts, others are more for home use, like slices of cucumbers to refresh tired eyes, olive oil to restore hair, or a lemon rinse to lighten hair color. This book contains more than 110 recipes, remedies, and ideas to enlighten and inspire.

Essence and Alchemy
If you are only going to buy one book on natural perfumery, this should be it. Part novel and part do-it-yourself guide, Aftel's book guides you through the relevant history and allure of natural perfumery, beautifully connecting the past with the present. The strengths of this book are not in the number of recipes, but in the fascinating history and the key concepts to help you get started in this amazing field.

Scents & Sensibilities: Creating Solid Perfumes for Well-Being
This is a pocket-sized book devoted to just one type of natural perfume: solids. Discover Mandy Aftel's world of solid perfumes. Delve into the world of natural aromas and discover their profound effect on emotional well-being, from relieving stress to enhancing sensuality.

Aroma: The Magic of Essential Oils in Foods and Fragrance
Yet another great book from the queen of natural perfume, Mandy Aftel, this unique cookbook combines food and fragrance for making bath & body products (you can guess which one we are most interested in). Although some individual ingredients are elusive (like the green tea essential oil), there are some exquisite blends (my favorite is her jasmine perfume).

Aromatherapy: A Complete Guide to the Healing Art
Kathi Keville and Mindy Green authored this well written primer with a lot of specific information on various aspects of essential oil uses. It covers some nice history of perfumes, psychological aspects of aromas, and good information on essential oil chemistry.
